Review: Tom Hearn, Gay Garbage

Sketch comedian Tom Hearn is here to continue Pride with Gay Garbage, a solo sketch comedy show that played for one night only at Comedy Bar. This is a loud, crass, in your face, and hella gay performance that will have you hooting and hollering in your seats.

Written and performed by Hearn, this night of sketch covers all aspects of gay life - from being introduced to your co-worker’s one gay friend (who actually isn’t into those musical theatre gays), the gossip from your grandmother and her friends at church, the joys of community theatre, and that awkward moment the morning after bringing a hot guy home from World Pride and not remembering his name (which doesn’t matter since he’s not into those musical theatre gays).

The performance kicked off with stand up by Ajahnis Charley, who is charming and hilarious while reminding the crowd that Black representation matters in both queer culture and in media, in particular Black people who aren’t just gorgeous. Their jokes are snappy and on point; they are definitely a comedian worth following.

Sanjina (Call Me Mother) is a drop dead stunning South Asian queen who brings sexy, sparkling dance breaks to the night. She’s a joy to watch.

Hearn recently picked up the Hit of the Fringe and Hot Ticket awards from the 2021 Halifax Fringe after seven sold out shows of Gay Garbage. He’s now taking the show on tour with this current stint at the Comedy Bar before performing in Edmonton, Alberta and St John, New Brunswick.

For a night of searing satire, characters, and hilarious impressions Gay Garbage is worth a night out.
