Review: JoJo Mason, Changes
British Columbia native JoJo Mason is riding a strong wave of success in recent years. Last year's Chapter Two EP was well received and it looks like this new release isn't going to change that at all. Mason approaches the standard country blueprint with a hefty heap of slow, dim-the-lights soul on "Doin' It Right." His unique, pop-tinged delivery on the lead single "Chemical" explodes from the get go before leaving the listener wanting a hell of a lot more.
The six-pack of tunes make for a sweet journey as Mason changes things up with the ballad "Love And War" which opts for a distant pedal steel in the background rather than a dominant electric guitar. However he outdoes himself with "I Shoulda Lied" which could've be mistaken for a Tim McGraw mid-tempo hit.
That's not to say everything here Mason touches is gold as "Get On" doesn't seem to get off on the right foot. Here he tries to make the most of a song that would seem like album filler at best. Fortunately that's the exception to the coda "I Shouldn't Be Here" which should be on radio for many months to come. Overall a consistently credible effort!
