Album Review: Dani Strong, Undefined

Though not every song on Dani Strong’s second record, the lively Undefined, finds a happy ending ⎯ see tear-streaked opener “Not Right Now,” or the driving “Healing” ⎯ each holds a determined fire at its core. Strong is the sort of artist who doubles as tough love dispensing friend, setting her stories of pain and overcoming to major-key country songs that understand the foundations of pop structure.

Some of the best moments on Undefined come when Strong marries her song-writing fundamentals ⎯ expressive, hook-filled storytelling and a steely determination ⎯ to sounds that push her country-rock slightly left-of-field. The spacious, near glam-rock stomp of “Bug In The Bed” is an immediate highlight, allowing Strong to stretch her voice around a new kind of song. But not every half-risk pays off ⎯ the “Hey Ho” chorus, synth washes and broad lyrics of “Wild Summer” make for a solid pop song, but can’t compare with the sharp wit and specificity of tracks like “Mrs. Jones (Evelyn)” and its rollicking sister song “Mrs. Jones (Becky).”

Strong’s vision of country music is empowering and resolute, carried by a belief that the only ways to look are within and forward. Undefined is a largely successful showcase for her clear-eyed storytelling.

Undefined was released October 23, 2020.
