Toronto Fringe Review: Potato Potato Saves The World (?)
When aliens from the planet Otnorot invade Earth to steal our water, it’s up to sketch comedy troupe Potato Potato to save the world through the power of, well, sketch comedy.
Potato Potato Saves the World (?) asks what would happen if the fate of the world was in the hands of a group of sketch comedians and an alien public defender with a less than stellar track record?
Political, satirical, and outright silly, Potato Potato puts together a showcase of some of their best sketches to convince space court that their planet is worth saving. However, they wonder if the issues the sketches address really make the best case for the continued survival of Earth.
Potato Potato Saves the World (?) is a call to civic action, with sketches about Toronto issues such as Doug Ford and Therme Spa, as well as more general sketches about dating managers and murder mystery parties. The cast of Potato Potato are all versatile performers, taking on multiple roles and characters throughout the show. They’re also great singers, with hilarious parodies of popular musical theatre songs such as “Seasons of Love” and “Cell Block Tango”, which fans of the genre are sure to be tickled by.
Though their sketches don’t always paint the planet Earth in the best light, the refrain they keep coming back to is that they hope it will spark conversation. They also encourage the audience to call their MPPs. Because in real life, sketch comedy might not be able to literally save the world, but it can definitely make us aware of the world, and give us some good laughs along the way.
Potato Potato Saves The World (?) is on now until July 11 at the Toronto Fringe. Show times and tickets
