Album Review - Nitish Sakhuja, Person of Colour

A staple in the cannabis-friendly comedy circuit, Nitish Sakhuja is known for his signature laid-back style of delivery. His stage personality gives the impression of someone who rarely finished his homework on time. And his second release, Person of Colour, delivers so much potential that I wish, just this once, he had.

Highlights of this album include ‘Condo Garbage Hole’ - a truly captivating story about dog ownership that leads unexpectedly into a show of appreciation for Sakhuja’s favourite hole, and somehow it gets even weirder. Listen also to ‘Cultural Appropriation’ for a refreshing take on social justice.

I have listened to this album several times, with every listen really wanting to love it. Overall, Sakhuja weaves through a number of delightfully absurd premises in a conversational tone that welcomes the listener to follow along. However, there is so much unexplored territory in this marathon of an album that, fully realized, could provide countless hours of engaging and clever material. It feels as if Sakhuja is giving away too much, without doing his work the justice it deserves.

This is not to label Person of Colour as a bad album. It is better than most albums recorded in 2022, and given the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the performance industry, it is a display of a clever writer and original thinker, with a tremendous amount of resilience and stage comfort. This is a good album, but it had the potential to be a great one.

While it is customary to set one’s material aside once it is recorded, I truly hope Sakhuja continues to expand on these jokes, and see them to the end. With that being said, I can’t wait to see what he produces next.

Person of Colour was released March 10, 2023 by Macaw Studios.
