Album Review: New Kids On Your Mom, Optimistic

‘Optimistic’ is the debut album from New Kids On Your Mom, a Canadian comedy rap duo made up of brothers Kirk and Myles Morrison, AKA Mileymo & Kirky Jay. The album is a half-hour sampling of millennial-friendly topics: Getting older, settling down, and generalized anxiety.

One thing is immediately apparent about NKOYM - They have a dedication to production value. Each track sounds professional and radio-ready thanks to their team: DJ Eggshell, Facca Audio & Production, and Case Mastering. The video for their debut single, ‘Damn It Feels Good To Be a Senior,’ is equally slick.

Choosing to lead with this ode to old age is a wise choice. It’s the catchiest song on the album with a fun, memorable beat.

The songs on ‘Optimistic’ follow a classic formula: Take things you wouldn’t consider badass, then give them the larger-than-life hip hop treatment. This approach is especially successful on ‘Atmosfear,’ a dreamy anthem for those among us who get nervous on planes.

As for their comedy chops, if you like silly boys and a bit of gross-out comedy, you’re guaranteed to have a good time. The jokes are timeless in that they aren’t aggressively topical, and they don’t dip into outdated or offensive tropes.

‘Optimistic’ is the perfect listen for low-stakes laughs with high production value.

Optimistic was released September 24, 2021.
