Album Review: Gabe Koury, Mommy, I'm Boring

Recorded in Toronto at The Dock Ellis, comedian and artist Gabe Koury has released Mommy, I’m Boring, a culmination of almost a decade in comedy. This marked Koury’s fourth attempt at recording an album, and varying from the usual adage and expression, the fourth time proved to be a charm.

Koury covers and addresses a variety of outwardly arbitrary topics in Mommy, I’m Boring from toast public relations (how could it possibly be on the same level as pancakes and waffles?), asshole checks, passport photos, an imagined Sesame Street episode prelude, the state of Florida (their lack of fruit and cat problem), to vegan cokeheads – just to name a few.

While recorded for a live audience, Koury’s dialogue manages to make it feel like he’s speaking to just the listener (with the exception of some crowd interaction), so the album ends up feeling like a one-on-one conversation with someone you just met. Rounding out the album are several musical impressions and accompanying conjured situations that music fans will get a chuckle out of. It’s a light way to end a debut album that is feel good and betrays its title of being boring.

Mommy, I’m Boring was released on November 8, 2023 through Cursed Blessings Records.
