Review: Canada's Drag Race, S1 E4 Single Use Queens

Each week Toronto based comedian Chris Middleton will review the latest episode of Canada’s Drag Race. The Canadian version of the worldwide phenomenon RuPaul’s Drag Race premiered July 2 on Crave. The main judges and mentors are Stacey McKenzie, Brooke Lynn Hytes, and Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman.

Okay, I could spend this whole recap talking about how much I disagree with Jeffrey. But I’m going to use my time better, maybe . . .

We start out with a matching briefs mini challenge with this hot ass Pit Crew. As one of Toronto's famous bottoms, I'm surprised I haven't seen any of these men on Scruff. Or maybe I have, and they blocked me for being annoying? . . . I need Jesus. The Pit Crew is also contractually obliged to rub their waistbands against their crotch to make their Junk snap up. Truly glorious.

Jimbo wins the mini challenge and gets to assign the materials for this Recycling Runway design challenge. House of Rust (Priyanka, BOA, and Lemon) got metal, La Maison Boraga (Scarlett, Kiara, and Rita) got plastic, and Jimbo chose paper for Maison Papier (Ilona, Tynomi, and herself). This is a seamless transition from Junk to junk, I see you producers!

Stacey McKenzie also takes the girls aside to give them MUCH needed improvement in all their runway walks. And I’m glad she’s getting her screen time, because she’s been my favourite judge since the beginning. I'm also all for making BIDDELL a permanent judge; he's got personality and KNOWS fashion.

The House of Boraga really snatched the challenge. Rita takes the win, and it’s well deserved. This team was truly leagues above the other girls. And no dolphins were harmed in the making of these outfits . . . hopefully.

The whole House of Rust should've been CLR'd, but rust is hard to remove, which was probably why they got a pass. I liked Lemon’s look, but it didn’t go with the collection. Even Priyanka was surprised her outfit got a pass! BOA was wearing an outer space diaper? A bra does NOT make an outfit, no matter how cool it is. Am I crazy?! Maybe I need Jesus . . . I’m at least glad they told BOA to stop relying on her quirkinesses.

La Maison Papier were absolutely SHREDDED, and for what? I loved this! I was surprised Jimbo got read for her wig when no one commented on Priyanka’s static clinging to her umbrella. Like, was it the best fashion show on the runway? No, but neither was the other group! This pastel ren faire was cohesive and conceptual, which should’ve made them safe.

It might have been cold in “Untucked”, but things got HOT! Untucked has been a bit “manufactured” and nice, but this seemed like PTSD group therapy. Ilona ignoring Tynomi’s mental breakdown and going off was THE TV moment I’ve been waiting for. Again, I need Jesus.

The bottom two were Ilona and Tynomi, and though it might have been a struggle to get Ilona into the lip sync, she had no problem performing the absolute MOST out of this song, and Tynomi WORKED IT OUT! I knew Girlfriend was a bop but damn. Unfortunately, rarely does a girl make it past her third lip sync, and we said goodbye to the drag legend, Tynomi. As sad as I am to see one Canada’s best drag queens go, I'm glad she doesn't have to put up with this competition anymore. I am truly laying in wait to see what fresh hell comes up next week in Snatch Game.
