Album Review: John Cullen, Long Stories For No Reason

Vancouver based comedian, podcaster, and writer John Cullen has released a follow up to his 2017 debut album. It’s called Long Stories For No Reason, but these days having a good laugh is reason enough. And if you like well written, charming, everyman comedy - you will.

Fans of Canadian politeness will enjoy a cordial greeting from Cullen off the top, immediately balanced by a bit about road rage. Which brings us to the overall vibe of Long Stories for No Reason.

Cullen has a case of BDE: Big dad energy. It may be because he daylights as a high school teacher, but his material is full of loveable paternal charm. Turn-ons: watching Chopped. Turn-offs: when they talk too much on Chopped. Loves: a cold brew and some shitty baseball. Goals: to outsmart an ATM.

Not that he isn’t hip. There’s a modern sensibility to Cullen’s classic charms. He’s not judgemental or ranty, he just knows what he likes. And he really knows what he doesn’t like.

This is solid material from someone who knows how to build a good joke (and if you want some tips, he’ll tell you for a cool $4 on Patreon). If you’ve been missing the comedy club experience, Cullen will bring it on home to you.

Long Stories For No Reason was released October 16, 2020 on Comedy Records.
